Rich Hulkow came to Marshall as a 34 year old coach in 1984, and retired 26 years later as the winningest Head Football Coach in school history. His 197-64 record included 11 League titles, 5 Regional Championships, 3 State Finals, and 2 State Championships for Marshall Football.
A three time MHSAA Regional Coach of the Year, Coach “Hulk” was especially honored to be elected by his peers to the Michigan High School Football Coaches Association Hall of Fame in 2003. Being applauded as the Detroit Lions Coach of the Year humbling, as it came with a billboard advertising Marshall Football on I-94. In addition, Rich was celebrated as the Detroit Free Press Dream Team Coach of the Year in 2009.
It’s notable that after starting out as a PE/Health teacher, “Hulk” led the Athletic Department for 24 years, also coaching Freshman Baseball, Freshman Basketball, and JV Basketball at various times during his tenure. He played a key role in raising hundreds of thousands of dollars for all of our Marshall athletic programs during those years, and adding a stint as Interim Marshall Middle School Principal to his list of accomplishments.
The Michigan State graduate and two-time football letter winner holds a Masters degree in Educational Leadership from Eastern Michigan University. Coach “Hulk” wishes to thank all the assistant coaches, staff, and especially the great young people who came through the Marshall program and played their hearts out for the Red and Black.
